Born on Jan 7, 1897 in Parramatta, George Harmer is another member of the esteemed Granville Rechabites junior club who enlisted in June of 1915 and was posted to C Company of the 36th Battalion AIF alongside teammate David Hamilton.
Harmer played rep football for the Granville district in 1912 with future Socceroo Bill Dane, a member of the inaugural Australian team that toured NZ in in 1922.
Working with the NSW Railways when he enlisted, he was also drafted into the Battalion band and after four months training, saw his first action at the Battle of Messines. His Battalion also fought at the Somme, Villers-Bretonneux & earlier at Passchendaele.
George was one of the lucky ones who returned home. He spent his entire life living in the Parramatta district and lived till the age of 74. He and wife Ruby had only one child, Edward.
