The States Breakdown

It is vital to understand that soccer in Australia was not and has perhaps never been a unity. Each region of the game has involved different demographics and cultural influences. Class composition varied strongly from region to region. For example, in 1914 Newcastle soccer was dominated by local born, working class players (many of whom were miners) whereas the game in Perth was a mixture, with patronage from the metropolitan political elite, ideological and development support from teachers while the players were diverse in class origins. In some regions pre-war soccer was virtually hegemonic (metro Perth, Newcastle, Ipswich, Northern Wollongong, Granville, Toowoomba), while in others it was a marginal, niche, albeit strong game (Adelaide, Victoria, Tasmania).

The links below will take you to broad demographic discussions of each of the regions listed.
