Alongside his teammate Alfred Law, Blackstone club captain, William Paterson was honoured by his club on 6 November 1915, presented with a gold ring band as a measure of its esteem and wished a successful military career.

He was killed in Action on 5 November 1916 at Flers, France.

The following words were read out at his memorial: “Weep ye not for the dead, neither bemoan him: but weep sore for him that goeth away: for he shall return no more, nor see his native country.” Jeremiah 22:10Â
