William Layton was an Ipswich-based machinist who enlisted in January 1915 only to return in October. Layton was fighting with the 15th Battalion in Gallipoli when he received a gunshot wound to the knee. He was evacuated to Egypt and then sent back to Australia, ending his war.

Years later he received a special certificate from the Victoria Barracks for being an Original Anzac. The certificate was notable for being illustrated by a cartoonist from the Australian version of Punch magazine. Layton had played soccer for the St Stephens club in the Ipswich and West Moreton competition, one of at least 13 current or recent players from the club who enlisted.

St Stephens did not re-emerge after the war. Layton died in 1975
