On 25 August 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald, reported: “Dudley, that small but keen, soccer district has sent 20 players to the front” and that “W. Williams” was one of the players lost. William John Williams, lived in Dudley with his wife, Mabel. Like many men in his community, he enlisted in “Newcastle’s Own” 35th Battalion and paid the ultimate price in a field in Belgium on 9 June 1917 at the age of 26.
