William Lettington was only 16 years of age when he arrived at the port of Fremantle from London in February 1911 to attend Scotch College. A few months later he debuted for the YMCA team and played for them in the 1911 and 1912 season. He was a tall lad, at almost 6 feet, and played as a centre back. In 1913 and 1914 he was a regular for the Wanderers until they disbanded. In 1915 he turned out for the Perth team and played his last game for them in August as he awaited his embarkation. Private Lettington served in the Middle East in 1916 and was transferred to France in 1917. On 1 November 1917 he was gassed in a field in Belgium. He recovered and was soon back in action until the end of the war. On 19 July 1919 he was discharged from the AIF and resumed civilian life in England. He died in Norfolk, England, in 1961 at the age of 66.
