Wilfred Ross played for Cities in the Toowoomba competition before enlisting in October 1914. Though a native of Maryborough, Queensland, Ross had been working as a station overseer in Toowoomba at the time of his enlistment.
He was assigned to the 4th Field Ambulance in Gallipoli and received a minor shrapnel wound in June 1915 but would not be evacuated until September due to dysentery. Ross stayed in England until March 1917 after a lengthy recovery before being sent to Egypt. Here he attended to School of Instruction and was finally attached to the Australian Mounted Division.
Ross was killed in action at Tel-Abu-Dalakh in the aftermath of the Battle of Hareira and Sheria in modern day Israel, and according to his records he was buried “15 yrds from tree at village Kirbet-um-Batieh bearing 30% by Chap. T. Mullins”. His name was added to the Toowoomba British Football Association honour board in May 1918.
