Mention In Despatches

On 21 May 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, “East Greta, small though it is, has sent eleven Soccer boys to the front. They have been in the first line lately, four of them wounded, while Walter Wilkinson was killed on the 9th June, and Charles Cartwright was killed before that day. The two deceased Soccer soldiers were very active members of East Greta seconds in 1912.” On 16 November 1916 Walter Wilkinson was promoted to Sergeant. In March 1917 he completed a wiring course in England and was then sent back to the front. Shortly after his death he was mentioned in despatches for showing conspicuous bravery in the field in the days prior.
