Before enlisting in 1917, City Rangers goalkeeper Walter Bing was one of the most eminent custodians in the local competition, being selected in 1915 to represent ‘Australia’ against expatriate representative teams. In France he was awarded the Military Medal for “gallantry and devotion to duty near VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 3rd May, 1918. Private BING was in charge of a post which was heavily shelled continuously and his unvarying coolness and resourcefulness undoubtedly saved many casualties among the garrison. When the position was very serious he volunteered to go through a terrific machine gun barrage and deliver a message. His coolness and bravery throughout were admirable and his work worthy of the highest commendation.” Lance Corporal Bing was wounded in action in August 1918 with gunshot wounds to the back and abdomen. He recovered and resumed as goalkeeper for the Perth City United team in the early 1920s. Walter Bing died in 1960, aged 67.
