Thomas Woolnough arrived in Perth from London in October 1912. He appeared regularly for the YMCA team from 1913 to the time he enlisted as the end of the 1915 season. In France he won the Military Medal: “On the night 10/11th June, 1918, at MORLANCOURT, near ALBERT, this N.C.O. showed great coolness and daring throughout the attack. On finding that the party detailed for the work had become disorganised, he collected a party on his own initiative, and bombed up a sap to a distance of 60 yards, driving the enemy before him. He then made a block in the sap and held same against a strong party of the enemy who attempted to drive him out.” He left Western Australia as a private and returned in 1920 as a Lieutenant. By 1929 he had returned to England where he married Ethel Reid. Thomas Woolnough died in Devon, England in 1974 at the age of 83.
