Thomas Duff Stewart was said to be one of the best forwards in South Australia just before the First World War. He played for the Adelaide club from 1909 to 1914 and was a prolific goal scorer. Playing in three winning Cup finals sides for the City club between 1912 and 1914, Tommy Stewart and his brother James both scored in the 2-1 success over Tandanya in 1912. The same year saw Tommy scoring six in a 9-1 league win over North Adelaide – a feat which may have put him in line for top goalscorer of the season. His only state team appearance saw him find the net twice in a 4-1 win over Broken Hill in 1912.Â
Tommy Stewart was born in Anstruther, Fifeshire, in 1885 and emigrated in 1909. He worked as a storeman and was single. Service with the AIF put an end to his impressive playing career.
He enlisted on 11 May 1915 and served with the 15th Field Ambulance in England and France where he was concussed once and gassed twice. The second occasion on April 18 th 1918 put an end to his front line service and eventually saw him returned to Australia and discharged in March 1919.
Thomas Duff Stewart married Alice Hilda Ragless at Glenelg in 1924, and he died at Glenelg in 1945.
