The only evidence that Bob McCune was involved in the Irymple club is his placement in the centre of the back row in the 1913 team shot. Without a playing kit, perhaps he was a trainer or an administrator of some kind — though given there are only 11 in the team shot, perhaps he was a player.

Moreover, there is little trace of McCune at all in the press. On his return the Mildura Cultivator (18 April 1917) reported: “Among the soldiers who returned to Mildura last week was … Private Bob McCune. The latter, though he has lost an index finger, looks the picture of good health.” He was also reported as an organiser in a subsequent RSA sports day.

What little we know about him is distilled from his military records. Robert McCune was born in Monaghan, Ireland around 1885 and migrated to Australia. He enlisted in July 1915 and was wounded in France one year later. He received a severe shrapnel injury to both hands, a result of which was his repatriation to Australia and discharge in May 1917.
