Wallsend-born miner, Robert ‘Panto’ Convery first appeared playing for West Wallsend in 1910 and was a stalwart player for the club for for six seasons. He enlisted in “Newcastle’s Own” 35th Battalion in January 1916. On 7 June 1917 Private Convery was killed in action in the Battle of Messines and buried in an unmarked grave in the field. For ten days he was incorrectly listed as wounded. As such his parents had received incorrect news of his wounding, only tragically to be followed up some time later with the news of his death. He was 25 years of age.
