Newcastle born miner Robert Brown was listed as a Cessnock player in 1914 and 1915. On 20 October 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald mentions the death of former Cessnock player Bob Brown in a letter from the front sent by Peter Coppock. Private Brown was killed in a field in Belgium on 13 July 1917. He was 24 years of age.
