Richard Walker was born on 29 September 1890 in Lancaster, Lancashire. Arriving in Kyvalley in 1912 a few months after the rest of his family, he worked as a farmer. In 1914 he captained the newly formed Kyvalley British Association Football Club.
He enlisted a year before his brother Thomas, in November 1915. His contribution was not particularly notable — though he was promoted to corporal and was also given a 3-months paid leave to study animal husbandry early in 1919. In April he married Eleanor Sarginson in Kendal, Westmorland.
Returning with his wife at the end of 1919, he settled into farming life and became secretary/treasurer of the reformed Kyvalley Club in 1920. The “Walker Bros” were still playing for the club in 1924.
He is not mentioned in subsequent soccer reports but is something of a figure of standing in the community. He also served in World War 2, based in Royal Park, Melbourne.
He died on 1 May 1954 in Heidelberg, Victoria, at the age of 63, and was buried in Tongala.
