Richard Haynes Utting was born on 30 April 1887 in Hampstead, Middlesex. In 1911 he married Annie Laura Poulson in Perth and began playing for City United in 1912. A strong and impressive player, he scored six goals in one game for City United in 1913. He moved to City Rangers before enlisting in July 1917, only arriving in the Middle East by July 1918.
A relatively uneventful period of service saw him rise to Corporal before reverting to Private.
He returned early 1919. If his pre-war form was of a high quality, he really found his feet in the postwar period. Advancing years (32 at war’s end) seemed not to hold him back. He played for City United and Perth City in the year of his return. Playing for the newly-formed Subiaco Club in 1923, he represented England v Scotland and Metro v Country. In 1924 he shifted, once more, to Caledonians, a year later representing WA against the touring Englishmen. Utting played for Callies into his 40s.
He died on 15 June 1958 in Cottesloe at the age of 71, and was buried in Nedlands, Western Australia.
