Richard Herford played under his older brother John’s captaincy for Sydney’s reserve team. The brothers enlisted at the same time and quite unusually were issued with consecutive regimental numbers.
Also serving in the 18th Battalion at Pozieres, Richard was wounded by shrapnel in the arm just a few days after his brother was killed. Richard’s wound were severe and he was repatriated to Australia in 1917.
