Born in Maffra Victoria in 1891, Raymond Samuel Page’s moved with his family across several towns in eastern Victoria. Both of Samuel’s parents had died by 1905 and he seems to have had an unsettled life before living in Mildura prior to the war. He played tennis at the Sandalong club with Davie Morrison, who likely encouraged him to turn out for the Irymple soccer team.
Among the first enlistments in Victoria he served in Egypt, Gallipoli (from landing till the evacuation) and France. Wounded at Gallipoli and given a number of temporary promotions, Raymond was made a permanent sergeant six months before he was killed in action at Bullecourt on 8 May 1917.
