Lewis Dymond was born in Birmingham, England in about 1883. He migrated to Melbourne in 1912 and there is little evidence of him playing in Melbourne aside from the fact that he was claimed by Birmingham Victoria as one of its enlistees.

He joined the 3rd Light Horse in South Australia in late 1914 and fought at Gallipoli and later in France where he was twice injured by gunshot in 1918. He married Leah Corrall in Birmingham in August that year.

His injuries eventually resulted in his return to Australia early 1919 after which he was invalided and discharged.
