Born in Granville in 1892, Pte Leslie Scarborough was another of the many members of the Granville rechabite players to sign up. Already a married man at the time of enlisting in 1917, Scarborough, a fitter by trade, sailed with others of the 33rd Battalion 7th Reinforcements on January 24th. The 33rd saw its first major battle at Messines also taking part in the action at Ypres and Villers-Bretoneaux among other battlefields.
Wounded in action twice, Scarborough returned home in September of 1918, seven weeks before the armistice was signed and lived the rest of his life in Granville, and like so many others died in his early 70s.
Football seems as if it was confined to his youth, and with the other 45 members of the Granville Rechabites club who served.
