Leslie Richard (Richard Leslie) Charlton was born on 7 December 1885 in Newcastle, New South Wales. He taught at North Fremantle from the age of 17 in 1902 and played for Training College in the years before the war, sometimes with his younger brother Ernest.
Second Lieutenant Charlton enlisted in 1916 and had been promoted to full Lieutenant by war’s end. He received a severe gunshot wound to the face in France on 24 April 1918 and was invalided to UK a few days later.
He returned to Australia in July 1919 and died 1 March 1952 in North Fremantle.
