One of the last games he played before enlisting was on 28 August 1915 for a select ‘England’ team against ‘Australia’ for the Red Cross war charity. Before embarking he married Violet May in 1916. Gunner Farrar served on the Western Front and on 10 October 1917 he received a gunshot wound to the head in a field in France. He was evacuated to England and spent three months in hospital recovering. When he was passed fit he was sent back to France until the end of the war. Upon his return to Perth he played a few more seasons for the Thistle club. Leslie Farrar died in 1956 at the age of 62.
