‘Joe’ Skinner arrived in Western Australia from England in 1911. In 1912 and 1913 he played for the YMCA team, moving to Austral in 1914. He enlisted in August 1914 and spent 18 months in Egypt before being transferred to France. On 29 September 1917 he was wounded in the field with gunshot wounds to both thighs and his penis. Bombardier Skinner was invalided and returned to Western Australia. He was discharged from the AIF on 31 May 1918. Fortunately his wounds healed. He married twice, had one son and lived to the old age of 94.
