Joseph Simpson arrived in Sydney from England in 1913. In 1914 he became a prominent player for Lancashire Society and was in the team that won the Dewar Cup against Burns Anniversary. When he enlisted in 1915 he was captain of the first team. He was killed in action in a raid on enemy trenches in Armentieres on 29 June 1916. He was 33 years of age.
