Joseph Gill appeared on the Merewether Advance honour board. He was 19 when he enlisted and by that stage had only represented Merewether in the junior and lower grade teams. On 21 July 1916 Private Gill received a severe wound to the forearm in France. He was transferred to England and invalided. In November 1916, before his departure to Australia, he went AWL for 26 days. He was punished with seven-days detention and forfeited 33 days of pay. By 1918 he was turning out for the Merewether team again. In 1920s he played many senior games for Newcastle City. In 1926, at the age of 30, he was still turning out for the team. Joseph Gill died in 1972, aged 76.
