On 24 August 1915, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported that “the latest supporter of the (soccer) code to enlist is Mr. J. E. Young, the patron of Adamstown Club, and the donor of the ‘Young Cup.’ Mr. Young has been a great supporter of the Adamstown Club, and he will be missed from their midst. He has also taken a keen interest in the cricket clubs and band at Adamstown.” By war’s end Private Young had been promoted to Sergeant and was admitted to hospital in November 1918 with trench fever and bronchitis. He died in Randwick, NSW, on 16 May 1943, aged 54.
