John Elshaw moved from with his family to Perth from Yorkshire, England, in 1911. In 1915, up until the time of his enlistement, he was making appearances for the Leederville club. Upon arriving in Egypt, he was transfered to the 48th Battalion and reached France in June 1916. On 30 September he was wounded severely in the face and shipped to England for his recovery. By May 1917 he was back at the front with the 48th Battalion and promoted to Lance Corporal. On 1 July 1917 ‘Jack’ Elshaw died of wounds received in a field in Belgium. He was 25 years of age.
