Rainey was assigned to the 3rd Field Ambulance, having previously served with the Royal Army Medical Corps. He took part in the Gallipoli landing on April 25, 1915. His battlefield experience ended in August after he was evacuated after being wounded. After recovering, Rainey served in England in a variety of camps until a final transfer as act as a nurse on a troop ship back to Australia. Here he was discharged as medically unfit. Rainey died in 1959.
