John Hassall arrived in Sydney from Lancashire, England in 1913. In 1914 and 1915 he played as a half-back for Lancashire Society. Very rare for the time, he declared “No Religion” on his enlistment form. In May 1917, after a stint in hospital for a fractured jaw, Driver Hassall was posted to 110th Howitzer Battery. On 14 June 1917 he was in an ammunition dump near Messines that was hit by a German shell. Hassall and 18 of his companions were killed in the explosion. He was 23 years of age.
