John Francis Ignatius McFarlane was born in January 1882 in Preston, Lancashire. Playing several games for Callies in the 1913 and 1914 seasons, he stepped up to represent Coastal against Goldfields as centre-forward in 1915. Enlisting before the commencement of the 1916 season (he stated he was 31 when he was actually 34), his military service was restricted to England and he returned to Australia on 3 May 1919, shortly thereafter marrying Lucy Ryder on 18 June. Evidence cannot be found to link him to postwar soccer in Perth. He died on 25 February 1960 in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, at the age of 78.
