The Footscray Independent reported on Saturday 30 September 1916:
Private James Stanley Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs Jas. Thompson, is reported to have been killed in action in France on August 20. He enlisted in July 1915, reached Egypt in October and went to France in February. He was 22 years of age. Prior to going to the war he was employed at Mowling’s Works. Hailing from England four years ago, he took a keen interest in soccer football and was a prominent member of the Northumberland and Durham Club. The Thompson family is well represented in the war,
with four brothers in total having enlisted, including Private Charles Thompson, another Northumberland and Durham player.
