James Richard George Hardwick was born in Perth and played for Austral as a 19-year-old in the 1916 season. He enlisted in April 1916 and embarked in December of the same year. Private Hardwick died of bronco-pneumonia on 5 November 1918, one week before the armistice, in a military hospital in France. He was only 21 years of age.
