James Campbell was born in Troon, Scotland and emigrated to Victoria in his early 20s. An active member of the community. he played for Irymple for 3 years.

James enlisted in March of 1916, a month shy of his 28th birthday. James’ service lasted for just over a year as he was killed in action in Bullecourt, France. In May 1917 James was reported missing and wounded, tragically, mere weeks after his brother, and fellow Irymple player, Robert was killed serving the Royal Scots.

Confirmation of James’ fate was provided in Decemeber 1917 and he is commemorated in France, at the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux.
