Henry James Blann Hay

On 26 May 1915, Sydney’s Daily Telegraph reported, “Private Harry J. Blann Hay, was killed at the Dardanelles. A single man, he was 21 years of age and resided with his mother at Leichhardt. A native of Aberdeen Scotland, he had only been in Australia for two or three years, first employed as a packer at Elliott Brothers and later on in the service of the Sydney Harbor Trust. He was a member of the Burns Soccer Football Club.” Private Blann Hay’s company landed at Gallipoli on 25 April. He was wounded in action on 1 May and died at sea on 7 May on board the hospital ship Gascon. His older brother William served with Scotland’s Gordon Highlanders and was killed in the Battle of Mons at the start of the war in August 1914.
