Henry Herbert Edward Cann was born in Thornton, Surrey, England in July 1894. The family of two parents and nine siblings had moved to Melbourne by 1911. Henry played consistently for Sandringham before enlisting in 1915.

Soon after joining his battalion in 1916 he received a gunshot wound to the face, causing long term deafness. Despite this he served three more years in medical related areas before being discharged in September 1919.

While the Cann surname appears in a number of post-war match reports we cannot be certain it is him. He died on 20 January 1980 in Port Melbourne, at the age of 85, and was buried in the Carlton North Cemetery, Melbourne.
