Private Harold Piper, the only son of Mary & Edward Piper joined the 4th Battalion A.I.F on February 26, 1917, and left for the front just a week after turning 21.

The timing of his enlistment meant that Pve Piper was deployed directly to the western front in a unit assigned mainly defensive duties. The shock to the system no doubt was behind his decision to go AWL for 5 days. He was arrested and tried accordingly.

Another member of the Granville Rechabites club, Harold joined the newly formed Granville Kewpies on his return.

Private Harold Piper, horse breaker and painter never left the area of his childhood, dying in 1973 and was survived by his wife of 53 years, Josephine, but sadly outlived his son Norman by some 20 years.
