Harold Long and his brother E. Long both played for South Adelaide from 1913 to 1914, and both apparently switched to St Peters in 1915. Harold sailed for Egypt with the 7th reinforcements to the 16th Battalion in June 1915. His brother did not join up, but strangely, two Longs continued to play for Saints until the end of the 1915 season.

Harold Long was born in Chatham, Kent. He was a labourer, single, and 23 years old when he enlisted in the AIF on December 29th 1914. He trained with the Light Horse remounts initially but switched to the 16th Battalion infantry and arrived at Gallipoli in time to survive the last few months of the campaign, suffering only the usual illnesses. In France, however, he was wounded at Pozieres in 1916, and then killed at Passchendaele on September 29th 1917 – shortly after being promoted to sergeant.

His brother E. Long played for Prospect in the early 1920s.
