George Seth Clayton was born on 8 October 1896 in Tilbury, Essex. Arriving in Australia as a 16-year-old, George lived in Port Melbourne, working as a factory hand. He played for Sandringham until his enlistment in July 1915.

His war was a litany of sickness and ill-health, with numerous hospitalisations. Nonetheless his health improved in May 1918 to the point that he could rejoin the 60th Battalion in France where he was killed in action six weeks later on 4 July.

He was buried in Mericourt-l’Abbe, Somme, France.
