George Mallinson, a carriage builder from Granville played his football with Granville Rechabites.
He was aged 21 at the time of his enlistment in 1915. He joined the Field Artillery as a driver. On 29th October, 1917, on the Menin Road east of Ypres, Mallinson’s column came under heavy shell fire. One of the shells destroyed the wooden planking of the roadway. Mallinson coolly led his colleagues and panicked horses out of danger, averting probable casualties. Eventually his own gun carriage was hit and he was thrown into a shell hole. For his courage under fire pressure Mallinson was awarded the Military Medal.
Mallinson returned to Australia in April 1919.
