George Harold Dore (known as Harold) was born at Hindmarsh in 1887. He and his brother Robert James (known as James) played together for Hindmarsh reserves from 1908 to 1912. Robert, a left back, was noted as the better player early on, but it was Harold who eventually played more games. A keen shooter, Harold was also a member of the Cyclists’ Rifle Club.

He married Ruby Booker in 1912, and worked as a clerk for South Australian Railways.

Harold Dore enlisted on 25 July 1916 and served with the 48th Battalion in France from mid 1917 to 28 March 1918 when he was killed in action at Dernancourt as the Anzacs battled to halt the big German offensive.

Harold’s brother Robert James, who did not enlist, was killed in an accident in 1927 when he was knocked off his bike by a car.
