On 25 August 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, “Dudley, that small but keen, soccer district has sent 20 players to the front.” George Broadbent, and his younger brother John, were two of them. In May 1917, he received a gunshot wound to the right knee. Due to the wound and a ganglion on his left foot, he was invalided and returned to Australia, disembarking in Sydney on 27 October 1917. Two weeks later his brother John, who was also invalided, arrived back in Australia.
