Victorian born Frederick Challenger learned to play football at Perth Boys School and progressed to play for the Perth club from 1913. His older brother Arthur William Challenger was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. Frederick enlisted in April 1916 and embarked for the Western Front on 28 October 1916. Thirteen month later he was killed in action in a field in Belgium on 30 November 1917. He had just turned 25.
