Francis ‘Frank’ Matthews was born on 16 June 1888 in Braidwood, New South Wales. He moved to Western Australia with his family around the turn of the century. The Westralian Worker reported on 9 July 1915 that “Frank Matthews, of Training College, has died in action. He is the second of last year’s College team to die the hero’s death, Wally Blair being the other. Both were capable players and perfect gentlemen. Poor old ‘Matt’ was shot in the stomach. Incidentally most of our teams are now in mourning for comrades lost to them for ever.”
