Hermann Francis Berthold was born in 1897 in Albany, Western Australia. He played for Training College from 1913 to 1915 before enlisting on 5 September 1915. After suffering from diptheria in Cairo, Private Berthold was stationed for much of the war in England, spending 1919 at a teachers’ college in Edinburgh. He returned in late 1919 and resumed playing for Training College in 1920. He married Olive Beryl Steadman in 1922 in Perth before taking a teaching post closer to his home town where he was involved across local sport, especially hockey and even umpiring (badly) an Australian Rules game. He died on 4 April 1977 in Perth at the age of 80.
