Edward George Whyman was a labourer from Shepherd’s Bush, London, and was in Adelaide by 1914 when he played for the Port Adelaide soccer club. Evidently a forward, he was noted scoring two goals for Port in a 7-0 league win over Cheltenham in May. He married Mary Arthur at Port Adelaide in August 1915 and left it until January 1916 before enlisting in the AIF at the age of 23.
He was initially in the 3rd Light Horse but was soon switched to the 48th Battalion, infantry (as many soldiers did when their horse riding skills were not up to scratch). However, Whyman never reached the Western Front. After a period of training in England he was found to have a severe hernia, so he was returned to Australia and medically discharged in June 1917.
Edward Whyman died in Adelaide in 1971.
