Douglas Sunderland was born in Manchester, England and arrived in Hobart in 1913, joining
the Corinthians club. In 1914, Douglas represented both Southern Tasmania in intrastate
matches and Tasmania in their match against Victoria on 8th August, just as war broke out.
He enlisted shortly after this match and departed Hobart on 19 October 1914. He served in
the Army Service Corps, 4 th Company, 1st divisional Train division, providing key logistical
support and rose to the rank of staff sergeant by the end of the war.
After his return to Tasmania following the war, he resumed his connection with Corinthians.
Owing to his age, this was primarily in an administrative capacity, including becoming
president in 1924. In addition to his soccer feats, Douglas was the 440m hurdles and high
jump champion of Tasmania in 1914, jumping 5ft, 11 inches to win. Douglas continued to live
and work in Hobart until his death in December 1966, aged 86.
