In August 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald, mentioned David Jones as one of the players who had gone to the front that had played for the “Dudley Hard Heads” in the third grade competition in 1914.
On 12 October 1917, he was severely wounded with a gun shot wound to the left thigh in Ypres, Belgium. He was invalided and returned to Australia on 16 December 1917. He disembarked in Sydney on 13 February 1917 and discharged from the AIF two months later. He died in 1955, aged 67.
