On 21 May 1917, the Newcastle Morning Herald reported, “East Greta, small though it is, has sent eleven Soccer boys to the front. They have been in the first line lately, four of them wounded, while Walter Wilkinson was killed on the 9th June, and Charles Cartwright was killed before that day. The two deceased Soccer soldiers were very active members of East Greta seconds in 1912.” Private Cartwright was transferred to the 12th Battalion en route to the Western Front and killed in action on 12 November 1916 in Armentieres, France.
