Bernard Alfred Trumper was a builder and plumber who emigrated to Queensland in 1911. He soon became involved in soccer, playing for Brisbane top-tier club Eskgrove for several years before enlisting in June 1916. At the time he was 28, married to Florence and was the father of four children.

Trumper was assigned to the 4th Pioneer Battalion and left Australia in October 1916, but would not reach France until 1918. The delay was initially due to hospitalisation through illness. After two weeks in hospital, Trumper was sent for more training at Perham Downs and eventually transferred to the 1st Army Troop Company of Engineers. He marched into the Australian General Base Depot in France in April 1918 but there are no other details regarding his service.

After the war, while still on active service, Trumper was diagnosed with rheumatism of the feet and discharged in 1919. He returned to Brisbane and died in 1949.
