Andrew Pettigrew was born in Balmain and was playing club football for Balmain Thistle at the outbreak of the war.

Serving with the 4th Battalion, Pettigrew was badly wounded in the leg in an action near Pozieres in 1916 and he was evacuated to hospital in England. He developed gas gangrene and died on 4 August 1916.

Pettigrew was buried at Hartshill cemetery in Stoke-on-Trent.
